Data collection and usage
What data do we collect and how do we use it?
When you interact with our Site, Web Extension, Mobile App, and/or Social Media Accounts, we collect data that could be used to identify you, hereafter referred to as Personal Data. Some of the data we collect is stored in a manner that cannot be linked back to you, hereafter referred to as Non-Personal Data.
Personally Identifiable Information
In order to invite users for various events such as beta-testing new features, we will invite users to voluntarily provide email addresses or social media handles through our various Social Media Accounts to be notified of such events that may be relevant to them. We will NEVER sell or distribute your email to marketing or advertising agencies (and will only share to 3rd parties in very limited instances, see Does Inkah share my data?).
In the case of our Mobile App, we will use your email to authenticate login through gmail. This email is logged on our server in order to facilitate login via OAuth 2.0 and for debugging purposes. If you log in to Inkah using Google, we will collect your email address, name, and assign you a unique user id to synchronize your data and enable you to log in using different devices.
Personal communications includes all forms of communication between Inkah and users. This can include through our internal emails and social media channels we are active in supporting (Instagram, Reddit, and Discord). Emails between Inkah and users will be kept confidential. We use any data collected from user interactions for internal purposes, such as finding and fixing bugs. Additionally, data from interactions collected on our publicly facing social media channels is used to garner feedback from our users and consequently update and improve our offerings.
This is data related to the manner in which you use the Site, Web Extension, and/or Social Media Accounts. For example, we will know how many users access a specific page on the Site and which links they clicked on.
We will also collect anonymized Non-Personal Data from the Web Extension that gives us insights about how users interact with the Extension such as how many words you save and what settings you use for Inkah. We use this aggregated data to better understand and optimize the Site and user experience of the Web Extension.
For the Mobile App, anonymized Non-Personal Data related to the way you use the app (navigating between different screens, tapping on buttons, etc.) are collected for observing app performance and crashes to help us diagnose technical issues within the Mobile App.
With respect to the Web Extension, we collect limited data from the websites you visit while the Extension is enabled such as text and words that are bookmarked for the target language and the URL of the website. This data is anonymized and used to help us improve your experience using Inkah, such as to debug missing definitions in our dictionary and identify trending words in the target language to improve our dictionary. Our extension is blocked from accessing text in read-only and text input fields (that could contain passwords or credit card numbers for example). Additionally, our extension only collects text data in the target language you have selected.
Data access and disclosure
Does Inkah share my data?
We only disclose Personal Data to third parties when
…we believe it is necessary to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, or potential threats against persons, property, or the systems on which we operate our Site, Web Extension, and/or Social Media Accounts.
…we determine that the access, preservation, or disclosure of your Personal Data is required by law to protect the rights, property, or personal safety of Inkah and users of our Site, Web Extension, and/or Social Media Accounts, or to respond to lawful requests by public authorities, including national security or law enforcement requests.
We may disclose Non-Personal Data to third parties when
...we need to release reports about user engagement to partners under agreement with us, or as part of progress reports we may provide to users.
Does Inkah collect data from children?
Inkah does not knowingly collect Personal Data from children under the age of 13. If we determine we have collected personal data from a child younger than 13 years of age, we will take reasonable measures to remove that data from our systems. If you are under the age of 13, please do not submit any personal data through the Site, Web Extension, and/or Social Media Accounts. We encourage parents, legal guardians and educators to monitor their minors’ internet usage and to help enforce this Policy by instructing their children never to provide personal data through the Site, Service, and/or Software without their permission. Google has excellent resources on Digital Responsibility for educators, legal guardians, and parents.
Please note that in some countries the age of digital consent is older than 13. If you are in one of those countries, you must be at least that age to use the Site, Web Extension, and/or Social Media Accounts.
Data storage, transfer, retention, and deletion
Where is my data stored?
Inkah is headquartered in the United States and has affiliates and service providers in other countries, and your personal data may be collected, used, and stored in the United States or other locations outside of your home country. Privacy laws in the locations where we handle your data may not be as protective as the privacy laws in your home country.
If you post or transfer any data to or through our Site and/or Web Extension, you are agreeing to the hosting and access of your data in the United States.
If you use the Web Extension on your computing device, data like bookmarks and settings will be stored locally on that device via Chrome storage API, Firefox storage API, and IndexedDB. Interactions with your client-side data are stored on our servers.
How secure is my data?
We do our best to make sure that your data is protected. However, we cannot guarantee a 100% secure connection between your instance of the Extension and our servers. Therefore, you acknowledge that you do so at your own risk.
Data sent to our servers is encrypted at rest and protected by TLS in transit. The security of the data stored locally in our Web Extension installed on your computing device requires that you make use of the security features of your device. We recommend that you take the appropriate steps to secure all computing devices that you use in connection with our Site, Web Extension, and/or Social Media Accounts.
If Inkah learns of a security system breach, we may attempt to notify you and provide data on protective steps, if available, through the email address that you have provided to us or by posting a notice on the Site, within the Web Extension itself, and/or Social Media Accounts.
